The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their selloff on Saturday and this time, they didn’t even wait until their game was over to do it.
The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Randal Grichuk from the Diamondbacks as Arizona was halfway through its game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported. He exited the game and headed to the locker room, though not before sharing hugs with his teammates.
Grichuk, the now former D-Back, was 0-for-2 while batting fifth against the Pirates. He’ll join a Royals team that sits 3.5 games back of an AL wild-card spot.
The 33-year-old, who played for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2018 to 2022, is slashing .240/.277/.457 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in 70 appearances this season.
MLB Network‘s Jon Heyman reported that the Diamondbacks will receive right-handed pitching prospect Andrew Hoffmann in return. The 25-year-old owns a 2.25 ERA with 55 strikeouts and 10 walks in 40.0 innings of work for triple-A Omaha.
