After seven seasons with the Yankees, Torres signed a one-year, $15-million contract with the Detroit Tigers, the team announced on Friday.
The right-handed middle-infielder is coming off a down year by his standards, posting a .257/.330/.378 slash line. He hit 15 home runs to go with 63 RBIs.
Torres, 27, is a two-time All-Star and played in the World Series for the first time in 2024.
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris told reporters Torres — who played shortstop and then second base during his stint with the Yankees — is expected to play second in Detroit while Colt Keith, who played the position for most of last season, will shift to first base.
Torres was originally acquired by the Yankees in the 2016 trade-deadline deal that sent closer Aroldis Chapman to the eventual World Series champion Chicago Cubs.
The Caracas, Venezuela, native has slashed .265/.334/.441 with 138 home runs and 441 RBIs for his career.
