The Toronto Blue Jays lost a pair of centre fielders in short order on Tuesday night.
Clase was hit in the knee by a Brandon Pfaadt offering in the bottom of the fourth. He was in apparent discomfort on the play and was tended to by Blue Jays trainers and manager John Schneider.
The 23-year-old outfielder stayed in the game to run, but was replaced by Straw in centre field for the next half inning. But Straw ended up injuring his ankle in the top of the fifth after seemingly twisting his ankle on a Josh Naylor double off the wall. Straw stayed down after the ball bounced away from him and toward left fielder Will Robertson.
Along with Schneider and trainers, Straw’s former Guardians teammate Naylor and the Blue Jays infielders made their way out to check on him as he tested his ankle.
Straw was replaced in centre by Alan Roden and later ruled out with a right ankle sprain by the team.
Clase, who flew out in his first plate appearance of the game, was ruled out with a right knee contusion, according to the Blue Jays.
Through 25 games this season, the speedy switch-hitter is now hitting .205 with one home run and three doubles.
Roden was eventually pinch-hit for in the seventh inning, with left-hander Jalen Beeks entering for Arizona. In the eighth, Will Robertson slid over to centre, marking the first time in Blue Jays history that they’ve had four different players man centre field in the same game, per Sportsnet’s Blake Murphy.
Toronto already has three outfielders on the injured list, with Anthony Santander, Daulton Varsho and Nathan Lukes all away from the club with their respective injuries.
