Bucs Fans Are Overwhelmingly NOT Happy With Liam Coen fasterkora.xyz

Liam Coen’s departure from the Bucs to become the Jaguars’ new head coach has been a huge topic of conversation in the NFL over the last several days.

And as much talk as there’s been about the move itself, there’s also been plenty of debate among Bucs fans, Jaguars fans and football fans in general about the way this all went down between Coen, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville.

You know the story by now. On Jan. 22, news broke that Coen would be withdrawing his name from consideration for the Jaguars’ head coaching job and would instead be signing a new contract with the Bucs that would make him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in NFL history. That night, Coen texted players and staff to let them know he’d be back for another year.

But after Coen turned them down on Wednesday, the Jaguars fired general manager Trent Baalke. That reignited conversations between Jacksonville and Coen, and when Tampa Bay tried to get in contact with Coen to have him sign his new contract, it couldn’t reach him.

There was talk of a personal matter, then when Coen finally did talk with Bucs head coach Todd Bowles Thursday evening, he reportedly briefly mentioned re-exploring the Jaguars job. Soon after, the Bucs received word that Coen was already in Jacksonville.

Later Thursday night, Coen would agree to become the new head coach of the Jaguars.

Friday saw just about every side of this situation come out with its own version of the story, which sparked plenty of debate. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer seemed to have one of the clearer explanations on how everything played out, but as is the case with a lot of things these days, people who have chosen sides are stuck in their version of how it all went down — and things have gotten ugly between Buccaneer fans and the Jaguars faithful on social media as a result.

Of course, with that said, Bucs fans are predictably upset with Liam Coen.

Bucs Fans Aren’t Happy With How Liam Coen Handled The Move

Bucs fans loved Liam Coen.

Loved — past tense.

There’s been a quick change in the attitude toward the offensive coordinator who helped engineer a top-five offense in the NFL last year, and it seems to have more to do with how he handled this situation than the mere fact that he took a head coaching job.

Remember, Bucs fans also loved Dave Canales after his first year as the team’s offensive coordinator. He then took the Panthers’ head coaching job — which obviously made him an NFC South rival — yet there wasn’t the same level of vitriol as there now is with Coen.

Across our Pewter Report social media channels on Friday, we ran a poll for Bucs fans on the Liam Coen saga.

The question: “How do you feel about Liam Coen reversing course and becoming the Jaguars’ head coach?”

The answer options: Good for him – I get it; OK – he handled it poorly; Pissed – bad look for him

The results told a clear story of how Buccaneer fans feel about their former offensive coordinator. Let’s break it down:

Over on Twitter/X, there were 1,747 responses to the poll. Only 21.4% said they were happy for Coen. Somewhere in the middle, 37.7% of fans seemed OK with the move but said Coen handled the situation poorly. And the majority of fans – 41% – answered “pissed.”

On the Pewter Report Facebook page, 197 responses yielded a similar breakdown. Only 12% were happy for Coen, 42% were OK but unhappy with how he handled it and 46% – again the majority – answered “pissed off.”

Finally, on our Pewter Report Instagram, 2,408 responses came to a similar conclusion. Only 187 voters (8%) were happy for the Bucs’ former offensive coordinator, while 1,100 answered “OK – he handled it poorly.” That worked out to 46% of the vote, while 1,121 voters (47%) responded with the “pissed off” option.

Overall, there were 4,353 votes and it led to this breakdown across all channels:

Good for him – I get it: 584 votes (13.4%)
OK – but he handled it poorly: 1,843 votes (42.3%)
Pissed off – it was a bad look for him: 1,926 votes (44.2%)

More than anything, these poll results seem to indicate that Bucs fans are unhappy with Coen more due to how he went about the situation than the fact that he left. But it’s safe to say that there are much fewer Liam Coen fans in Tampa Bay now than there were at this time last week. After all, 3,769 of 4,353 voters – 86.6% – aligned with the idea that the way everything unfolded was poorly handled by Coen and/or it was a bad look from him.
