Son Heung-min made an instant impact on his LAFC debut, coming off the bench to win a penalty as his new side drew 2-2 with Chicago Fire in the MLS on Saturday.
The 33-year-old, who featured just days after leaving Tottenham for a reported MLS-record of £19.5m, came on for the last half an hour of the match and was brought down in the box as the Los Angeles club rescued a point late on.
Carlos Teran had given Chicago the lead but Ryan Hollingshead levelled things up before the 20-minute mark.
Jonathan Bamba then restored the Fire’s lead before Son was fouled in the area by Teran as he sprinted onto the end of a through ball with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The penalty was awarded following a VAR check and Denis Bouanga dispatched the spot-kick to ensure both teams got a share of the points.
“It was a great pass and there was definitely contact and it was definitely a penalty, no doubt about it,” Son said after the match.
“A bit disappointed not getting three points but I think everybody put in a lot of effort, happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon.”
Ahead of LAFC’s next game against New England Revolution next weekend, the forward said he would be working hard to feature from the start.
“I’m getting ready and it was a decent 30 minutes in my legs getting ready for next week,” he added.
“So we’ll see how I progress in the training sessions and with the players and we’ll see if next week I can start the game and make a big impact.”
Son spent a decade at Spurs, making 454 appearances for the north London club and scoring scoring 173 goals after joining from Bayer Leverkusen for £22 million in 2015.
The South Korea superstar made his final appearance for Spurs in their 1-1 preseason draw against Newcastle in Seoul and received a guard of honour upon being substituted in the 65th minute.
