Tottenham and Newcastle shared the spoils in Seoul as their pre-season clash finished 1-1, as Heung-Min Son got an emotional farewell after announcing his departure this week.
The game sparked into life almost immediately, with Tottenham making the brighter start.
Within the first few minutes, the North London side forced Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope into two sharp stops – first to deny Pape Sarr’s close-range effort and then to push behind a follow-up, which led to a flurry of early corners.
Spurs were rewarded for their fast tempo in the fourth minute. Kevin Danso stepped up from defence to intercept and slide a clever ball into Brennan Johnson, who took a touch before driving a low shot from outside the area into the bottom-left corner past Pope.
The opener forced Newcastle to grow into the game. They began to control possession, using the midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley and Joelinton to work the ball into dangerous wide areas.
Anthony Gordon was a constant menace, and on 17 minutes he saw a right-footed effort blocked after Jacob Murphy’s pullback, before Joelinton’s header went narrowly wide from a Guimaraes cross.
Pope’s heroics at the other end kept the deficit to one when he denied Mathys Tel’s low shot from close range, but Newcastle’s pressure eventually told.
In the 38th minute, Anthony Gordon exploited space on the left and rolled a perfectly weighted pass across the Spurs box for Harvey Barnes.
The winger opened up his body and steered a right-footed strike into the near corner, bringing Newcastle level.
The interval prompted a flood of changes from both managers, with Spurs introducing Micky van de Ven, Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence.
The changes initially disrupted Tottenham’s rhythm, and Newcastle came out sharper, with Anthony Gordon wasting a golden chance early in the second half, pulling his shot wide from the centre of the box.
The game became increasingly stop-start as the second half wore on, with a series of fouls and injuries breaking up the flow.
Yves Bissouma and Richarlison were introduced just after the hour mark, with Newcastle responding by bringing on Tino Livramento and William Osula.
Despite the interruptions, there were chances: Bruno Guimaraes had a long-range strike sail over, while Bergvall tested Newcastle’s replacement goalkeeper Mark Gillespie with a low drive from outside the box, which was pushed away.
As the match moved into the final stages, the tempo slowed further. James Maddison was stretchered off after looking to pick up a serious injury, and was replaced by Yang Min-Hyeok, while Newcastle freshened things up with late changes, including Travis Hernes.
Richarlison earned a yellow card for a clumsy foul as frustration crept into Spurs’ play, but the Magpies could not find a winner either.
